Macintosh Setup: Classic Networking

This setup is for Macintosh users who are NOT using "Open Transport": The components needed are "MacTCP", and "FreePPP".

If you already have these items please go to step 5.

If you are using open transport go to the Open Transport Macintosh Setup

  1. Check the "Control Panels" folder (in the "System Folder" your hard drive) to see what components are installed.
  2. Acquire any components (mentioned above) that are missing from (1) a friend (2) the Internet section or from us directly.
  3. To install any of the components, drop the items you wish to install on the icon of the closed "System Folder" on your hard drive. The computer will prompt you with a message telling you that it is going to put these items in their proper places. Simply click "OK" at these prompts. If you do not receive these prompts from the computer, then locate the items you are installing, drag them back out on the desktop, and repeat the process.

  4. After successfully installing the required components, configure the "MacTCP" control panel:
    • Open the "System Folder," then the "Control Panels Folder," and then "MacTCP."
    • Check to see that the "PPP" icon appears in the first window and see that it is highlighted. If it does not appear, then it was not properly installed.
    • Click the "More" button.
    • You only need to fill in a few things in this window. Configure the window as it appears below:

OBTAIN ADDRESS: Click "Server"
GATEWAY ADDRESS: 202.165.0.35
DOMAIN: idirect.net.au
DOMIAN NAME SERVER: 202.165.0.67
DEFAULT: (click top button)

Click "OK." Restart your computer.

The next step is to configure the control panel "FreePPP":

  • Open the "System Folder" then the "Control Panels Folder" and then open "FreePPP"
  • Click the "Accounts" tab
  • This window appears:



  • Enter "INTERNET DIRECT" as the "Server Name:"
  • In the "Phone Number:" box type out Modem Bank Phone number in as shown ((07) 54750 0400 for Sunshine Coast>
  • Make sure the pull down menu has "Directly" selected.
  • Enter your username and your password as shown.
  • Click "OK"
  • Now you are ready to try and connect.

Make sure your modem is attached to the phone line and that nobody else is using the line. Click the "CONNECT" button in the first screen of "FreePPP".

  • A PPP status window will come up..
  • The modem should dial..
  • Make some screaming noises..
  • Go through the connect steps..
  • The status window will disapear..
